Gentoo

Compile-it-yourself control; tune every package to your exact machine.

Gentoo compiles everything from source, on your machine, with your choices baked in via USE flags. Want a system with no Bluetooth, no printing stack, and every binary tuned to your exact CPU? Set the flags, run emerge, and Portage builds precisely that. No other mainstream distro offers this degree of compile-time control over what your software even contains.

The price is time and study: initial installs are measured in hours (or overnight for large packages), and understanding Portage is a genuine discipline. The payoff is a system optimized and minimized to a degree binary distros cannot match, plus an education in how Linux really fits together. Notably, Gentoo now offers official binary packages too, softening the compile burden where you choose. It remains the ultimate expression of "my machine, my rules."

Strengths

  • USE flags: compile-time feature control no binary distro can offer.
  • Per-machine optimization: -march=native everything, if you wish.
  • Portage: the most powerful package system in Linux.
  • Rolling and endlessly configurable, from init (OpenRC or systemd) upward.
  • Official binary packages now exist to skip the biggest compiles.

Considerations

  • Compiling is slow; major updates can occupy a machine for hours.
  • The learning curve is real and the documentation, while excellent, is dense.
  • Maintenance is a hobby in itself; neglected systems take effort to revive.

Standout features

  • The definitive source-based distro since 2002.
  • USE flags and per-package environments: surgical control.
  • Superb documentation and a wiki second only to Arch's.
  • Runs everywhere from embedded boards to ChromeOS's foundations.

Who it's for

Best for

Control absolutists and learners who enjoy the build itself, with hardware time to spare.

Maybe not for

Anyone who wants software now; the compile tax is constant and the system rewards ongoing attention.
