Kali Linux

Rolling Debian-testing with a quality buffer; strip the pentest tools and it's a clean daily driver.

Kali Linux desktop screenshot

Kali Linux is the industry-standard penetration testing platform: six hundred-plus security tools, maintained by Offensive Security, on a rolling Debian Testing base. Metasploit, nmap, Burp Suite, Wireshark, aircrack-ng; if a security professional reaches for it, Kali ships it, integrated and current. Certifications and courtrooms alike treat it as the reference toolkit.

Modern Kali is friendlier than its reputation: it defaults to a normal non-root user, an undercover mode makes the desktop look like Windows for discreet fieldwork, and it runs happily from live USB, WSL, containers, or a phone via NetHunter. One honest note: as a daily driver for non-security work it is usable but pointless; its defaults and repositories serve the trade. For that trade, nothing else is close.

Strengths

  • The definitive pentest toolkit: hundreds of tools, curated and current.
  • Rolling Debian Testing base with a quality buffer.
  • Runs everywhere: live USB, VM, WSL, ARM boards, NetHunter on Android.
  • Sensible modern defaults: non-root user, clean Xfce desktop.
  • Backed by Offensive Security and aligned with their certifications.

Considerations

  • Not designed as a general daily driver; its priorities are the tools.
  • Security-tool repos make mixing with general-purpose sources unwise.
  • The name on a work laptop can raise eyebrows; know your environment's rules.

Standout features

  • Undercover mode: one click makes it look like Windows in the field.
  • NetHunter brings the toolkit to Android devices.
  • Win-KeX gives a full desktop experience under WSL.
  • Everything-is-preconfigured tool integration no manual setup matches.

Who it's for

Best for

Security professionals, students of the trade, and authorized testing work of every kind.

Maybe not for

General desktop use; if you are not doing security work, a standard distro serves you better everywhere.
