Fedora Atomic

Fedora's immutable desktop family (Silverblue/Kinoite) — atomic updates, easy rollback, a base you can't break.

Fedora Atomic desktop screenshot

Fedora Atomic (best known through its GNOME edition, Silverblue) is Fedora\'s answer to the fragile desktop: an immutable core image, updated atomically via rpm-ostree, with applications in Flatpaks and development work in containers via Toolbox. If an update misbehaves, you boot the previous image; the base system is versioned like code.

The everyday experience is deliberately ordinary: it looks and feels like Fedora Workstation (or Kinoite for KDE). The revolution is underneath, in what cannot happen: no half-applied updates, no dependency drift, no gradually-rotting system state. Habits shift (layering RPMs is possible but the container workflow is the intended path), and in exchange the machine gains an appliance\'s reliability with a workstation\'s freshness.

Who it's for

Best for

Developers and reliability-first users who want a Fedora that cannot be broken by an update or a careless afternoon.

Maybe not for

Heavy customizers of system internals; the locked base is the feature and the constraint.
