Vanilla OS

An immutable, atomic Debian desktop with apx — install anything, break nothing.

Vanilla OS desktop screenshot

Vanilla OS applies the immutable, atomic idea to a Debian base with unusual creativity. Updates use an A/B dual-root scheme (via its ABRoot tool): the new system installs to the inactive root and you reboot into it, so a failed update simply leaves you on the working side. The desktop is stock GNOME, clean to the point of minimalism.

Its signature tool, apx, is a package-manager multiplexer: it can install software from Debian, Arch, Fedora, and other ecosystems into tidy containers, giving one machine access to practically every Linux packaging world without touching the immutable base. The project is young and small compared to Fedora\'s atomic family, but its ideas are genuinely novel, and its Debian foundation gives the armored-desktop concept a stability-first flavor.
