GNOME

A clean, gesture-driven, opinionated desktop that gets out of your way once you adapt.

GNOME is desktop Linux\'s bold opinion: no taskbar, no desktop icons, no system tray. Instead, one Activities overview unifies windows, workspaces, and search behind a single keystroke, and dynamic workspaces spawn as you need them. It is a workflow designed as a whole, and once the gestures and habits click (especially on a trackpad), it feels inevitable.

It is also the flagship desktop of the ecosystem: default on Ubuntu and Fedora, first to mature Wayland, consistently polished visuals, and an extension system for those who want to bend it (at the cost of occasional breakage on upgrades). GNOME asks you to adapt to it. The people who do rarely leave; the people who fight it should probably use Plasma or Cinnamon instead.
