Xfce is the desktop that respects your attention span. A traditional panel-and-menu layout, a fast file manager (Thunar), and settings that do what they say: no reinvention, no surprise redesigns, no drama. Releases arrive years apart and change little, which sounds unfashionable until you realize your desktop from five years ago still works exactly the same way today.

It is light without being spartan: a full desktop with compositing, plugins, and real configurability, comfortable on old laptops yet plenty pleasant on new ones. Xfce is the default choice of distros aimed at stability and modest hardware (Xubuntu, MX, Kali) precisely because it disappears into the background and lets the machine do its job.
